Storm Ciaran – what you need to know
As Storm Ciaran sweeps towards the UK, it is predicted that the Channel Islands will experience its worst storm in more than 30 years, with winds of up to 85mph forecast alongside heavy downpours.
So what can you do to protect your business and your home?
You can take a number of precautions to prepare for bad weather, at work and at home;
- A substantial amount of damage occurs because buildings are poorly maintained. On a practical level, much can be done to reduce damage by ensuring your property is well maintained and any issues such as loose roof tiles are fixed – although Storm Ciaran is on its way, it’s not too late to make last-minute checks.
- Make sure you have emergency contact numbers for your insurer and utility companies to hand, in a safe waterproof place.
- Listen out for bad weather warnings on local radio, social media, and TV – we’ve already had advance notice about Storm Ciaran via these channels.
- Check the websites of the Government of Jersey, Government of Guernsey, and Isle of Man Government, as well as websites such as the Met Office for detailed weather forecasts.
- Make sure any unsecured items, like ladders in gardens, that can cause damage in high winds are secured.
- If you have a car or other vehicles, try and move them away from where flooding is expected.
- If you are in a flood-risk area try to move valuable or essential items upstairs or to a high place.
- Keep a mobile phone with you.
- Check if it is safe to use electricity, gas, and water supplies.
- Keep a torch with you.
- Avoid driving where you can – and if you do have to travel, make sure you take a torch and blanket. Ideally, stay indoors and advise your employees to work from home if that is in line with Government guidance.
