Exploring Careers in Insurance: Daniela’s Experience with the Life in Finance Programme
We were thrilled to welcome Daniela Calaca, who joined us for her work experience through Jersey Finance's Life in Finance programme.
The Life in Finance programme provides Year 12 students in Jersey with valuable work placements in the finance industry. It's designed to offer firsthand experience, skill-building, industry exposure, and networking opportunities.
We had a quick Q&A about her work experience time with the Rossborough and Gallagher teams.
What are three important things you have learned in your placement that you didn’t know before?
- There is a variety of departments within the insurance industry.
- The wide range of items and assets that can be insured.
- The unique roles and significance of each department in the insurance process.
Has your understanding of this job or industry changed since your placement?
Yes, definitely. I realised that many people aren’t aware of the variety of roles within insurance.
It was fascinating to learn about the different departments and see how each operates with its own focus and function.
What surprised you the most about the types of things that need insurance?
I was surprised by some of the items that need insurance, such as jewellery and fine art. It makes sense, given their high replacement cost, but it hadn’t crossed my mind before.
I also learned about motor fleet insurance and the different types of healthcare insurance available.
Can you give an example of something you noticed about how the office is run or how people work together?
The office has a friendly and collaborative atmosphere, with strong relationships across departments. This teamwork is crucial in insurance, where clients may have policies involving multiple departments, making effective communication across teams essential.
Did your experience during the placement change your mind about wanting a career in the insurance or finance industry?
Yes, it did. I came into the placement with limited knowledge of insurance and its various departments.
This experience has given me valuable insights into a career in insurance, and I’m now more interested in pursuing a role in insurance or possibly the broader finance industry.
